Use gparted software
You preferably need four partitions

size double the RAM

Root for or storing programs
5 gb to 50 gb

fourth Partition
used for storing settings and documents)

5 gb to any size
\home
Ext2
Use Ext2 since a driver is available for  windows vista and lower versions  to access this partition  from windows read write
